4 Steps to unlock the power of how much money you can make with a simple, short online course.
Who doesn’t like to make money while they sleep???
I love to explore all kinds of things I could do online to make money. I’ve tried selling an ebook (recipe book), publishing two EDMs, making a commission off referring customers via affiliate programs for AI writing tools… (Copy.ai & Jasper) and more.
But I always have this idea in my mind that’s gonna make me sustainable passive income AND help other people at the same time.
ONLINE COURSES!
So, after thinking about it for a while, I decided to partner with my friend Husain when I was in China. We made about 10 videos on how to make delicious, amazing soft cookies.
Here was our plan for making a video online course:
1. Research:
Decide a Topic People are willing to pay to learn.
I was running my cookie studio in Dali, China. Making cookies and selling them to people, and they love it! So I am pretty confident about my cookie-making skills and experiences.
I wasn’t so sure if there would be enough people buying cookie making online courses if I made one. So I went to Udemy.com, to do some research on sales of the existing cookie making online courses.
There are about 10 online courses teaching how to make cookies, a 39-minute video course is selling at $9.99 to $49.99, and 2656 students enrolled. So since uploaded, it’s made at least $13,280! (Udemy often offers a promotional price of $9.99 and the profit share with authors is 50/50)
Another cookie making course, priced at $29.99 -$9.99, is 1 hour video and has 107 students enrolled. So since uploaded, it’s made at least $535.
I find online courses fascinating because although the amount of investment is fixed, the income potential is unlimited.
You can sell your digital product, and your online course, over and over again without any cost over time.
The above research shows that cookie-making online courses have the potential to make some dough on Udemy.
So we can move on to the next step:
2. Write a course outline:
Next, we figure out WHAT to sell to people. AKA the course content.
This one is easy since I already know how to make cookies. So all I needed to do was to decide how many and which cookie recipes to include in the course.
This also determines the length and how much time we need to take the videos, In the end, I decided there are 10 cookie recipes to be included in the course. And we shot 10 cookie making videos from 2 different angles in three days.
3. Edit the video course content:
This is the most time-consuming part, and since Husain and I were too busy to edit 10 videos, we decided to outsource the video editing task and share the cost equally.
It took a while to complete the editing for 10 x 12 mins videos.
4. Upload the online course to Udemy
This is the final step! And also where I am at right now. Before I can submit the online course for review and share it to the world, I also need to prepare other resource, such as printable recipes.
I am uploading all the video content to the Udemy platform this week, and when that’s ready, I will share the page link with you all.
And I’ll share more about the revenue report along the way.
