Can you make money writing on Medium?
As a writer, I want as many people to read my content as possible. And I am always looking for different ways to monetize my content.
If you are like me, Medium might be just what you’re looking for.
In this article, we’ll be discussing the revenue model of Medium and how much money I made as a writer on the platform in the last 12 months.
Medium Partner Program
Medium operates on a subscription-based model, allowing its users to read an unlimited number of articles for a monthly members fee.
This fee is then split between Medium and its writers who joined the Medium Partners Program based on the popularity of their articles.
The more views and reading time from the paid members reading your article, the more loyalties and earnings you will receive.
So how do I write a popular article?
The quality of your content and the popularity of your articles are some of the factors in determining your earnings.
But I noticed writing articles about trending topics is also important to attract readers’ interest, not only on Medium but also on the internet.
Let me show you an example.
Since October 2022, I have been writing articles about AI writing tools. So I write about my experience using AI writing tools like Copy.ai and Jasper to write.
And on Nov30, Open AI launched ChatGPT, I then quicked wrote and published an article about my experience as the article on Dec 7, 2022:

As you can see from the screenshot, 87% of the traffic is from outside of Medium which includes 6,700 views from Google. And it’s getting 300 and more views every single day. (I regret that I did’t post this article on my blog prior to publishing it on Medium)
You might say “oh but didn’t you day Medium only pay you from views of the paid members? then why would the external views matters?”
Here’s why:
Like I said at the beginning of this article, I like to have multiple ways to monetize my content. So when I publish articles on Medium, I make sure I have more than one ways to make money from it.
In most of my articles, I insert affiliate links when I am introducing something. Maybe it’s a password manager that I’ve been using for years, or it’s the AI avatar generator to produce explainer videos
So the views not only generate Medium’s loyalties but also brings me an affiliate commission.

And here’s how much I made since I joined Medium Partner Program since Jan 2020.
As you can see, I didn’t make any money for the first one to two years of publishing on medium.
To give you a context, I have published 43 articles on Medium (include this article you are reading) so far.
I would say it will be quite difficult to make a full-time living from just publishing on Medium.
However, since Medium has internal traffic, it’s a good starting point if you don’t want to manage your own blog or use it as a lead magnet for affiliate programs or digital products you are promoting.
